Watteau (artist): photo and biography

Antoine Watteau-an artist whose biography is described in this article. He was one of the most original and well-known in the 18th century. And became the founder of a new style-the Rococo, based on the traditions of Dutch and Flemish art.

Early years

the Artist Antoine Watteau was born 10.10.1684 in Valenciennes. Originally, the city was Flemish, but then went to France. Antoine's father worked as a carpenter and a roofer, but he earned little. However, by noticing the son's interest in drawing, when Antoine wrote small paintings of everyday life, gave him to study a local artist.
But talented his teacher was not perfect. His lessons didn't give Antoine. And in 18 years he went on foot to Paris, wanting to find a mentor who would help him to improve in painting.[br]

First job

1702 Antoine lives in Paris. First, he had fairly tight. To subsist, he found work as an apprentice at the artists Studio in Marietta, which was located on the bridge of Notre Dame. Painters wrote to the merchant, who was interested only in the quick sale of paintings. The owner of the shop was paying its employees a pittance. And for them, the painters copied the lurid picture. First real teacher – C. Gillot

And fate gave Antoine a gift – meeting with K. Gillot, a real talented artist. Watteau became his disciple. K. Gillot preferred to write rural stories, theatrical scenes, rural feasts. Watteau captured the theme perfectly and afterwards often adhere to her. She was close to him in spirit. But it soon became clear that the biases and tastes of gillot and Watteau largely do not coincide. And this led to the breakup of their relationship. But that didn't stop Antoine to maintain respect and appreciation to the teacher for whole life.

a New teacher – K. Audran

Watteau began a search for a new teacher. It was Claude Audran. He worked on the scenery and harsh on wood. From 1707 to 1708 Watteau worked and studied with K. Adrana. These lessons taught him fluidity, expressiveness and ease in the painting. As Audran was the curator of the collection of paintings the Luxembourg Palace and Antoine has had the opportunity to admire art from the old masters.

But in any case, Antoine was necessary to get an education. And his path still lay through the Academy of arts. In 1712, Watteau was able to go to this establishment. He had the opportunity to get the title of academician, which he received in 1718.

Life and work

after a while he became known Paris artist. His paintings enjoyed great popularity, and fans are not allowed to pass, wanting to chat with a talented painter. Part of the reason Watteau often had to relocate.

As described by Antoine friends, he was slight of build and average height. His mind was always insightful, alive. Said court little, he expressed all his emotions in drawings and paintings. Constant thoughtfulness has created a certain sense of melancholy nature. In communicating Antoine was often cold, which was disconcerting even friends, forcing them to feel uncomfortable.
Indifference was one of the major drawbacks of Watteau. Other “fad” – contempt for money. The enormous popularity of his paintings and the amount that they were asked, irritated artist. He always believed that written works of art paid too much, and everything that seemed to him the surplus was returned back.

Illness and death

French painter Watteau died 18.07.1721 G. at the age of 36 years. Cause of death was consumption. Part of the disease was exacerbated by the trip to England in 1720, where he lived for almost a year. In England Watteau worked a lot, his paintings were a huge success. But the climate of this country was not conducive to good health which began to deteriorate. Even before the trip to England Watteau became ill with tuberculosis. And the disease started to progress. Home Watteau returned very ill.
He was staying with a friend who was selling paintings. But because of illness, Watteau became very weak and worked only in the mornings. Six months later wished to change their place of residence, and friends helped him to move to Nogent. But the disease has receded. Watteau grew weaker, I wanted to return to his home, but did not.
